What is Aromatherapy exactly?

March 2, 2017

Aromatherapy can be a mysterious subject to fully understand. When I first became interested in it I only knew it to be something associated pretty smelling candles. So like with most things I bought a book, yes I'm a nerd.  Now I will try to not get too technical because I'm sure not everyone is willing to go down that rabbit hole with me.

I will say this, it's definitely more than candles and pretty smells. Aromatherapy is the holistic therapeutic application of genuine essential oils for enhancing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of the individual.

Top reasons people see an Aromatherapist

  • Stress/anxiety

  • Headaches/migraines

  • Insomnia

  • Hormonal problems

  • Skin problems

  • Respiratory problems

  • Sinus problems

  • Musculoskeletal problems

A few facts about Aromatherapy

  • It's the fastest growing healing discipline

  • It's a science

  • Can support our innate ability to heal ourselves

  • It's been practiced for over 4000 years

How is it beneficial?Aromatherapy is being used in many ways from healing stress and anxiety, wound healing, to skin care. Many skin care brands out there are utlizing essential oils and incorporating them into their products. However, essential oils offer more than just a beautiful fragrance. Essential oils have important healing components. Essential oils are the essence of the plants, roots, and fruits from which they come. These oils are Essential because they are essential to the plants themselves. Whether protecting them from pests, illness, and their ability to survive. These abilities are, in a sense transferable, to those that use them both therapeutically and energetically. Let's take Frankincense as an example. Frankincense comes from the Boswellia Sacra tree that has the ability to grow in unforgiving environments, they sometimes grow out of solid rock. The trunk of the tree has the ability to expand and ground itself in such a way that it cannot be ripped out of the ground in violent storms.  Because of this it is said that energetically it is known to be very grounding, resilient, centering, and strengthening. I find this to be so powerful. It has this very complex and determined ability to survive. When you apply that to how it's useful to those that use it there's no surprise that it has cell regenerative properties.

Frankincense helps keep you grounded in times of distress, known to strengthen your mind to help you focus, and is one of the most effective essential oils for skin care. How interesting is that?!

How can I utilize this in my skin care routine?

Okay! Now his is the fun part! Incorporating essential oils into your skin care routine can be fun and simple. Here are a few ways to get the amazing benefits of essential oils:

  • Try adding a few drops to your daily cleanser or toner

  • Into DIY? Combine your favorite oils and add them to a homemade scrub, body oil, or face mask

  • Add essential oils to a bath at then end of a long day

  • Add essential oils to a diffuser and create a calming energy in your bedroom before bedtime

The list goes on and on. The idea is to reach for Essential Oils to create a mood, enhance a favorite DIY product, or as a therapeutic solution.  Incorporating essential oils into your daily routine can be easy and most importantly beneficial. So try it, just make sure you're using geniune & authentic essential oils and using them properly.
